Judgement Day '04: René Duprée vs John Cena
Judgment day for Dupree
TIM BAINES
Ottawa Sun
MAY 2004
Rene Dupree has been dreaming about being a wrestling star for as long as he can remember. At age five or six, he went for ice cream with Harley Race. He played soccer on a field with Japanese star Masahiro Chono.
Following in his father Emile's footsteps, the younger Dupree, whose real name is Rene Goguen, stepped into the ring for the first time at the age of 14.
And it's been full steam ahead ever since.
Now just 20, Dupree will face John Cena for the U.S. championship at tonight's WWE Judgment Day pay-per-view.
What a ride it's already been!
"I dreamed about getting here, but I never thought it would happen," said Dupree on the phone the other day. "I grew up in a wrestling family and I knew I wanted to be in it. I started working out with weights when I was 11. At 14, I was already 200 lbs.
"I begged my father to give me an opportunity to try it."
Try it, he did. And like it, he did.
Problem is the fans don't like him too much. In fact, they love to hate him.
"Even when I was trying to be a fan favourite, people booed me," said Dupree with a laugh. "It works for me. If my job is to get people to hate me, I'm doing a pretty good job of it."
Dupree says he was a bit overwhelmed at first, looking around and seeing major stars everywhere.
"It was nerve wracking ... weird at first," he said. "But after a while, you get comfortable. They're just human beings too."
He says his favourite programs so far have been against Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock.
But facing Cena tonight will be another big notch in his belt.
"It's my biggest match to date," he said. "I don't think the fans will be disappointed.
Dupree says he does little outside of the ring except lift weights and watch old wrestling tapes -- keeping an eye on legends such as Rick "The Model" Martel, Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig and Shawn Michaels.
And what may come off as an aloof personality is Dupree just being his normal, quiet self. None of this haughty La Resistance persona.
"I'm really shy when it comes to normal life," said Dupree. "I'm not very outspoken. There's a mistaken conception that I've got a big ego, but I'm just quiet. It's not because I'm arrogant or cocky ... it's just the way I am."
He's just letting his actions speak for him. And so far they've been speaking pretty loudly.
Dupree brings Cena into the room and his Cena with some more offense.
REVIEWS
John Cena defended his United States Championship here against Rene Dupree.
New talent were getting a chance. Rene was the next in line to see how well he performed on a major stage. At Judgment Day, both men did just fine. Cena retained his title, but Rene had a nice showing.
Rene Dupree has really upped his game a notch or two since he moved to Smackdown from Raw last month.

Judgment Day; U.S. Title Match May 16, 2004
John Cena vs. Rene Dupree
Cena starts off on the
offensive, and gets Dupree to the outside. Cena hits Dupree with some hard
right hands, followed by an impactful headbutt. However, Dupree, out of
desperation, pulls Cena across into the post. He's got the crowd against him,
and for the first time of the night, the crowd seems to care about the match.
Dupree brings Cena into the room and his Cena with some more offense.
Dupree goes for an Irish whip, but gets flipped to the apron. However, as Cena goes to hit Dupree, he gets tossed to the outside.
Dupree continues on the offensive, and puts Cena in a forceful bearhug-like hold.
Cena hits Dupree with a
headbutt, but Dupree quickly gets back in control and forces Cena into the
corner. Dupree gets back into that bearhug hold and also begins hitting Cena in
the back. Cena begins punching his way out.
Cena gets out of the
hold, and starts connecting with some right hands. He clotheslines Dupree a few
times, and gets the crowd really hot. After an Irish whip, he then hits a
sidewalk slam. However, as he goes for a five-knuckle-shuffle, he misses, and
Dupree gets back in control.
Dupree dances and tries
to do his own version of the shuffle, but Cena gets out of the way. Cena goes
upstairs, but Dupree counters quickly and hits John with a DDT.
Cena gets Rene in an F-U
position, but it gets turned into a Dupree neckbreaker. Two-count.
"Cena
gets a backslide on Dupree, only good enough for a two-count. Dupree goes off
the ropes, and Cena catches him for an F-U. Cena wins. REVIEWS

Rene Dupree vs Wataru Sakata
RIKI Army
vs. HUSTLE Union 5 vs. 5 Elimination Match: King RIKI, Riki Choshu, Genichiro
Tenryu, Yoshihiro Takayama & Wataru Sakata vs Magnum TOKYO, Toshiaki
Kawada, Shiro Koshinaka, René Duprée & Akira Shoji Following its
10/10/09 show the Hustle promotion went into liquidation. The final show Hustle
called 'JIHAD' was distinguished by its final ever main event - during which
Rene Dupree went out to show what he was made of. The English language reviews
all agreed that Dupree was at the top of his game ....
"The
final Hustle main event involved wrestlers from two teams battling each other
with the winner of one bout going on to face the next man from the other team.
Joining the action Rene Dupree comes in to battle Genichiro Tenryu who has won
the previous match.
"Tenryu attacks Dupree as he tries to come in between
the ring ropes and gives him the Randy Orton hangman's DDT before introducing
him to the turnbuckle pads and some of those great punches. Genichiro Irish
whips his man off the ropes and looks for a bodyslam, but Dupree is able to
turn it into a small package. Then, in a sentence that I never thought I would
type, RENE DUPREE PINS GENICHIRO TENRYU. Amazing.
Team 2
sends Wataru Sakata to the ring at this point.... bear in mind that Sakata is a
vanilla face with limited rings skills. Dupree takes him to a new level
.....
"Sakata and Dupree chop each other and Rene hits a flying
shoulderblock and a discus punch before taking Wataru to the corner for some
right hands. The former La Resistance member climbs to the top rope after a
slam, but Sakata cuts him off with a leaping kick that knocks Rene down
face-first into the turnbuckle. Sataka, seeing a big opening, charges at Dupree
as he stands on the apron and blasts him with a Yakuza kick that knocks him
down to the arena floor and into the guardrail. The collision with the rail
opens up a vein in Dupree's forehead, and he writhes on the floor while losing
blood. He attempts to re-enter the ring, and Sakata is briefly successful in
keeping him on the apron with some punches, but Dupree eventually lands a right
of his own and re-enters the squared circle.
The French Canadian doesn't stay
on top for long, though, as Sakata catches him with a back body drop and stuffs
him into the mat with a piledriver. Sakata stays on his opponent by applying a
chinlock, though he eventually releases the hold voluntarily and switches to a
series of kicks. Sakata continues with relatively nondescript offense for a bit
before removing the turnbuckle pad from one of the bolts. Why he would do that
when he is in control of the match I do not know.
He tosses Dupree into the
exposed bolt right in front of the referee, not drawing a disqualification.
Sakata follows that up with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex and climbs the ropes,
though he gives up on that when he sees that Dupree has begun to regain a
vertical base. Sakata knocks his man back down and goes up to the top, only to
have Rene cut him off with a dropkick.
Rene gets
up to the second rope, where the two men trade punches until Sakata uses the
exposed turnbuckle to his advantage, slamming the second generation star's head
into it several times. This causes Dupree to do a wacky, corckscrew-esque bump
off of the ropes and down to the mat. Sakata follows him off with a double
stomp the Quebecer's gut, but, instead of selling it like death, Dupree
immediately school boys Wataru and gets a flash two count. The same result
comes when he goes for an inside cradle. Dupree gets in some high-impact
offense as well, connecting with a sit-out spinebuster and attempting a German
suplex. Sakata lands on his feet out of that move, then going to the abdominal
stretch and then to a rear naked choke. Dupree is quickly out cold, and Sakata
gets the fall.......
Match Thoughts: Hustle elimination matches are
a bit odd to review , as you can't really look at them as one big match... What
you almost have to do is .. just enjoy the isolated sequences of awesome
grappling goodness when they pop up. Those moments were plentiful here,
including ... Rene Dupree showing more promise in eight minutes than he showed
in five years on WWE television.........
1. Special Tag Match: Ultimo Dragon & KG def. Super Crazy & Hajime Ohara (12:54) with an Asai DDT by Ultimo on Ohara.
2. 2/3 Falls Match: TAJIRI def. Muscle Sakai (2-1). TAJIRI def. Sakai with an Horizontal Cradle (0:21). Sakai def. TAJIRI in a Tug of war (0:02). TAJIRI def. Sakai with a Pinfall (12:26).
3. RG & The C def. Yoji Anjo & The Golden Cup #1 (14:00) with a Huracanrana by RG on Cup.
4. RIKI Army vs. HUSTLE Union 5 vs. 5 Elimination Match: King RIKI, Riki Choshu, Genichiro Tenryu, Yoshihiro Takayama & Wataru Sakata def. Magnum TOKYO, Toshiaki Kawada, Shiro Koshinaka, René Duprée & Akira Shoji(34:40). Tenryu eliminated Shoji (7:12). Duprée eliminated Tenryu with a Small Package Hold (0:41). Sakata eliminated Duprée when the Referee stopped the match (Sleeper Hold) (9:12). Koshinaka eliminated Sakata with a Japanese Leg Roll Clutch Hold (5:29). Takayama eliminated Koshinaka with an Everest German Suplex Hold (3:12). Kawada vs. Takayama - Double Countout (6:50). Choshu eliminated Magnum with the Scorpion Deathlock (2:04)
.
Above, Rene triumphs over Tenryu of the RIKI corps with a small package. Then Sakata , the next of the RIKI corps tears into Rene with chops and kicks. Rene's face is bleeding from one of Sakata's kicks. Sakata delivers a low blow to Rene. Sakata removes the padding from the corner post, and strikes Rene's face on the metal. With Rene on the mat Sakata climbs to the corner post, but Rene recovers, discharging a drop kick. Sakata recovers, pounding the face of Rene on the corner post. Rene is slammed to the mat with a spinebuster, then trapped in the cobra twist, and sleeperhold! Rene struggles but finally succumbs to the sleeper. Referee does the count out. Dramatic imagery and a great match.
